Zagreb Secession

I wanted to show you this building for quite some time. It's one of my favorites in Lower town. Today it is a Croatian state archive, but at first it was the National and university library. I love it because it is one of the most beautiful examples of Secession in Zagreb and probably the whole country. It was built in 1913. by an architect Rudolf Lubynski. Please don 't miss to notice these really cool owls on top of the building!

  2. It's a magnificent building and I'm glad you pointed out the owls or I would have missed them because my attention was on the beautiful relief and pilasters.

  3. @ kostas:
Many of the historic buildings in Zagreb did find a new use, but I would like to see more of the industrial architecture of the end of 19. and beginning of 20. century becoming museums, concert halls, etc. It is a shame not to use them as I believe it also represents our heritage, a different one maybe, but still a heritage. I always admire the London Tate Modern - the power plant was on a terrific spot in the city and they found a way to make a use of it.

    @ Hilda:
I'm glad you like it! The owls, as a symbol of wisdom, have a strong meaning on a building as this. And this ones look as a really mean owls with their big black eyes! :D

  4. This is hands down my favorite building in Zagreb. Some may like the National Theatre on Trg Marsala Tita but I love this place. I spent time inside the library and my camera was out of battery power. I wish I had photos of the interior glass work and ceilings. Maybe you can share those some other time. For those who have not seen this, the owls are enormous and there are three on each of these prominent points of the building.
